This is a superb introduction to Trekking in Nepal among some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole country, with rich Tamang culture, amazing natural scenery and awesome mountain vistas. Trekking to tamang heritage will is fully enjoyable trip with local people.

Developed by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (TRPAP) under the UNDP fund, the Tamang Heritage Trail is a newly developed trekking destination or trekking trail which was developed to distribute equal tourism opportunities among the poor rural communities living in this region. Since its development the revenue and other income generated by the tourism activities in this region has gone into contributing directly to the local communities and supporting the local livelihood, womens empowerment and environmental conservations.

Situated in the Langtang Region in north central Nepal, the route presents a combination of spectacular Himalayan views and the opportunity to experiencing a unique Tamang / Tibetan culture heritage.

The trek initially starts from Kathmandu from where the 132 stretch of road leads us to Syaphrubesi by private vehicle or you can go by local public vehicle. From Syaphrubesi the route pass through Goljung, Gatlang, Chilime, Tatopani, Rasuwagadi and Briddim whilst ending back again Syaphrubesi and driving back to Kathmandu.

Among others, the opportunity to stay and explore Gatlang village remains one of the most fascinating highlights of this trip. With its unusual setting, exotic costumes, Tamang cultural show, traditional handicraft, religious festivals, intriguing architect, Gatlang is sure to leave the visitors memorized. The view point at Goljung Danda provides the opportunity to gaze beyond Tibetan frontier with amazing mountain vistas that include the Sangen Himal, Paldor peak, Tibetan ranges, Langtang Lirung and Lauribinayek range. As we head further we also have the opportunity to relaxing in a soothing natural hot spring, known as Tatopani, where taking a bath even just for once is believed to cure many of the skin alignments. From here we head to Nagthali hill (3300m) followed by Thuman where we will explore age old monasteries and traditional houses adorned with rich wood carvings.

In addition the home stay opportunity at Gatlang village visitors will also have the same opportunity in Briddim village, largely influenced by the Tibetan culture the village of it is widely known as the home stay village. Travelers stay with the host family, eating traditional food and sleeping in their home. The menu usually consists of rice, Tibetan bread, syakpa (Sherpa stew), potato, Tibetan tea and Briddim wine. Visitors can also observe the local rituals and cultural practices with the host family and go on village walks to see the lifestyle and customs of the local residents. In the evening, the local people put on traditional costumes and perform dances in honor of the visitors.

Located at an elevation of 2,229 meters, this tiny Tibetan style village comprises 43 houses mostly made up of stone and slate roofs. The village is a living museum reflecting traditional Tamang culture and lifestyle. The local inhabitants are Tamangs and their culture is largely marked by Tibetan influences. Some of the major festivals celebrated in the village are Dawa Dangbo Chhiju (in February), Chuwa Chhiju (November), Yarsang (early June), Dukpa Chhiju (August) and Lhosar (February). Syabru and Mane dances are performed during festive occasions. The Tamangs are mostly engaged in rearing livestock, farming and trading with Keyrong in Tibet. Where the timure is the gateway to passage Tibet.

Day to day itinerary:

  • Day 1:Kathmandu- syabrubensi driving by local bus or private vehicle 7/8 hours over night at lodge
  • Day 2:Sbrubensi- Gatlang 6/ hours walk.
  • Day 3:Gatlang Rest day: hike to the monastery and Parbati kunda.
  • Day 4:Gatlang- Tatopani( hotspring) walk 6 hours.
  • Day 5:Tatopani to Thuman
  • Day 6:Thuman to Rasuwagadhi (2240m) About 7 hours of walking
  • Day 7:Rasuwagadhi to Briddim (2290m) Walking around 6 hours
  • Day 8:Bridim - Lama Hotel walk 5, 6 hours
  • Day 9:Lama Hotel - langtang(3541m)
  • Day 10:Langtang village - Kyanjin Gompa and Langsisa Kharka

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 1Kathmandu- syabrubensi driving by local bus or private vehicle 7/8 hours over night at lodge
    In the morning after break fast we leave Kathmandu for Syabrubensi, a village which is also the starting point for the treks into Langtang Valley. Our journey will be a winding road through frequently switchbacks. On a clear day we get to enjoy outstanding views of Manaslu, Annapurna and Ganesh Himal . Our trek for today ends with a descend into a small villages of Syabrubnsi. We spent overnight.
  • Day 2Sbrubensi- Gatlang 6/ hours walk.
    We will have a breakfast in the hotel and start hiking to Gatlang village. We will follow the road and climb gradually uphill for about 3 hours to reach to Deurali danda where we can see the beautiful panaromic views of high himalays including langtang range, Ganesh Himal range, Tibet range, and the flow of Langtang river at the bottom of Syabrubensi and continue walking to Gatlang village where Tamang people are inhabit in majority.
  • Day 3Gatlang Rest day: hike to the monastery and Parbati kunda.
    We will explore the Tamang people of Gatlang village. Visit to Parbati Kunda(lake) and cheese factory.
  • Day 4Gatlang- Tatopani( hotspring) walk 6 hours.
    We will walk downhill and we will reach Chilme where we can see the Chilime Hydro poower dam side and construction work can be seen and cross the suspension bridge of Bhotekoshi river.   • Day 5Tatopani to Thuman
    Early in the morning breakfast will be served by hotel staff according to our order menu. We will gearup for the day hike to another beautiful Tamang village Thuman which is our destination for the day.We have to walk gradually uphill passing the Nakthali Pass(3135m) if the weather is clear then we can get a chance to capture the images of Ganesh himal range, Tibet range, Langtang range and Gosainkunda range. It takes 1 and half or 2 hours to reach Thuman village from Nakthali village.
  • Day 6Thuman to Rasuwagadhi (2240m) About 7 hours of walking
    We will hike to Rasuwaghadi for about 7 hours. This is the entry point for the trade way between Republic China and Nepal.
  • Day 7Rasuwagadhi to Briddim (2290m) Walking around 6 hours
    Today we hike for about 6 hours for the day to reach our next destination Briddim. Briddim village have home stay facilities and can visit Buddhist Monastery.
  • Day 8Bridim - Lama Hotel walk 5, 6 hours
    We will walk for 5-6 hours for the day to reach our destination. We walk gradually uphill passing several Tamang villages like Khamjim, Sherpa Gaun and Lama hotel which is our destination for the day. We can have a beautiful natural beauties high Himalayas and mountain ranges.
  • Day 9Lama Hotel - langtang(3541m)
    The trek will be very much easy and comfortable as we will hike through the jungle where the trail is graually normal the trail is neither uphill or downhill. We will have our lunch at Ghode Tabela . Then we will continue hiking to our destination walking at the Langtang river side. As Rhododendron is the National flowers of Nepal there are 32 different types of Rhododendron where 8 different types of Rhododendron can be seen in this trail/trek. There is a Police where there will be National park checking and we will reach to the Langtang Village. During the earthquake on 25 April 2015 this village totally collapsed by the 7.8mgh. this village has been settle at the present so we are ready and safe to go there.
  • Day 10Langtang village - Kyanjin Gompa and Langsisa Kharka
    Today we will hike only upto lunch time i.e 2 hrs from the morning till Kyanjing Gomba and we will have to stay over there for a night. We will have tea in the middle before reaching our lunch point. Altitude will be increasing as we go higher up and after lunch we will hike for the sightseeing of Langtang himal,Dorje lakpa , Yala peak, Nyakhang , Gangala Pass,Langsisa etc so that it will help for tomorrow's hike to Tserko Ri.
  • Day 11Explore day
    Early in the morning breakfast at hotel and we start hiking for the day to Kyanjing Ri. We have to hike gradually uphill for about 3 hours and when we are at the top we can catch the image of Langtang Lerung which is regarded as one of the highest mountain in the Langtang Himal region. The height of the Langtang Lerung is 7200m. Yala peak, Cherkuri, Dorje Lakpa, Ganjala Pass, Nyakang Ri, Langtang Glacier and many more breathtaking beautiful scenery of Natural beauty can be observed from the top. we back to the same hotel for the overnight.
  • Day 12Kyanjing Gompa - lama hotel 6-7 hours
    Early in the morning we will have breakfast as usual previous days and start hiking down to the lama hotel for about 6-7 hours. The day will be great descending down from high altitude to the lower altitude. We pass the Mundup village, Langtang village, Thanshep, Ghodetabela, and riverside of Langtang river. After the Ghodetabela we will hike through the jungle of pine tress, Rhododendron trees and wild animals can be seen if you are lucky enough. We spend overnight at Lama hotel.
  • Day 13Lama Hotel-Thulo Syabru
    Today we will hike for 5-6 hours for the day. We will pass many beautiful tamang villages like Rimche danda, Bamboo, Pairo(landslide). we spend overnight to Thulo Syabru.
  • Day 14Thulo Syabru - Sing gomba(3250m) 5-6 hrs walk
    Today we have to hike gradually uphill to continue our trek through the jungle with the magnificent views of Tamang villages, We can enjoy the panoramic views of snow capped mountain of Ganesh Himal range, Langtang himal range, Gosainkunda range and Mansalu himal range.
  • Day 15Sing gompa -Gosainkunda(4380m) 5-6 hours walk
    Today we enjoy the fantastic panoramic views ho himalayas including the Annapurna Hiunchuli , Manaslu, Ganesh and Langtang. We follow a ridge for the most part of the day and catch a glimpse of t fo the first of the holy lakes. The third lake, Gosainkunda is a particular religious and cultural significant for the Nepalese and is one of the nepals most sought after pilgrimage sites.
  • Day 16Gosainkund- Tharepati(3510m) 8 hours walk
    We move descend from the high altitude to the lower altitude. We will walk in the same path as we did in the precious days inside the jungle. It will be an easy day to hike downwards. We might get a chance to see the wild animals too.
  • Day 17Tharepati-Kutumsang(2470m) 4-5 hours walk
    Today we hike for 4-5 hours in a day. The temperature gets hotter as we are descending from high altitude to the lower near sea level. For the whole day we hike through the thick forest where big Pine trees and Rhododendron flowers with different colors can be seen and if possible we can see the wild animals like Monkey, Deer and the Chirping sounds of different small and big birds. We stay overnight at lodge.
  • Day 18Kutumsang - Chisapani(2180m) 4 hours
    We hike after breakfast from the hotel and we will hike through the vehicle road. We will pass through the different villages with their different style and different people. Our total hiking for the day will be 4 hours.We can catch the image of beautiful great Himalayas including the snow capped mountains.
  • Day 19Chisapani - Sundarijal, Kathmandu
    Early in the morning we can get out of the bed room to see the sunrise view with the snow capped mountains and the beam of sun rays hitting the white snow capped mountains and changing the color into golden. We can capture the image of major mountains like Annapurna Himal range, Dorje Lakpa, Langtang Himal range, worlds highest mountain Everest, Manaslu range and many more. We have a breakfast and start hiking for the day to Kathmandu. We have to hike through the Shivapuri national park where we can see the wild animals. Day will be a good to hike inside forest. When we reach to Sundarijal then we start driving to Kathmandu via bus or a private car to the respective hotels around Thamel.
  • Day 20Departure to The home land country.
